Trump's Sweden Snafu

Trump originally suggested there was a terrorist attack in Sweden. There wasn’t. Then he “clarified,” but was wrong about that, too.

What’s going on?

During his Saturday night rally in Florida, Trump said, “you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden,” in regard to his Muslim travel ban. This would suggest a terrorist attack or something else bad happened in Sweden Friday night. But nothing of the sort happened at all.

On Sunday, Trump “clarified” to say he was referring to a segment on Fox News that talked about immigrants in Sweden and suggested refugees were causing higher crime in that country. But this was the result of taking some Swedish police interviews out of context. So it’s not really clear what Trump was on about.

Why is it important?

I’ll level with you: it probably isn’t. This is more or less another “Bowling Green massacre.” Of course, Trump’s supporters think there really was an attack and that it’s simply being covered up. Because why not.

What can I do?

Bury your head in your hands and cry? Or find some other way to cope with our bizarre “post-truth” reality.

I’ll be sure to let you know next time a violent tragedy doesn’t happen.
